our kids

When Mandi came by to visit today, the first thing she said was, "Dad! Just think, you'll never have to do a first day of physical therapy ever again!" Our kids have truly been their dad's biggest cheerleaders throughout this whole experience. From offering to stay overnight with him in the hospital, going out to get him food if he's hungry for something in particular, to visiting every day (and in many cases, hanging out for hours), they have been such a support to both of us. Thank you, Mandi and Doug, Carson, Tessa and Christy.

Carl had two sessions of therapy today: occupational and physical. Occupational therapy is treatment that helps people achieve independence in their lives. This service will include a customized treatment program to improve Carl's ability to perform daily activities like moving himself from bed to chair, dressing, bathing, etc. This morning he worked on some basic weight lifting to help strengthen his upper body.

Physical therapy is focused on the large motor groups that contribute to walking, reaching, standing and physical activities. This type of therapy works on strength, balance, and range of motion. Today they worked on bending his knees and moving his legs a bit.

The rehab center has a different feel than the hospital. We are much more on our own here, not as dependent on nurses and staff. It means we have to be more assertive and involved in the process.

It's late so we'll post again tomorrow.
